NEW PLANT INTRODUCTIONS FOR 2007

Looking for some new plant material to use in your garden next spring? Below is a sampling of what might intrigue you.

Annuals
Calibrachoa Cabaret 'Hot Pink'
Free flowering. Non-fading, large blooms
Colour - hot strawberry pink
Foliage remains dark green
Impatiens auricoma 'Jungle Gold'
A yellow Impatiens for the shade. Boasts good show of golden yellow orchid-like blooms held above dark, glossy green foliage. Produces blooms more prolifically in dry conditions. Well suited for containers.
Pelargonium Designer
'Peppermint Twist'
A unique, showy flower pattern in red and white. Highly weather tolerant. Well suited for growing in pots, hanging baskets and patio planters.
Salvia spendens Picante
'Burgundy'
Has the refined features of the Salsa salvia, but sports a more vigorous and larger plant habit. Tolerates heat. Has dark foliage and huge, tightly stacked florets. Will add a hint of spice to the garden.
Height - 35-40cm (14-16")
Grows in partial shade to full sun.
Coleus 'Fishnet Stocking'
The green and burgundy of this plant have a design which resembles a fishnet.
Height - 50-90 cm
Spread - 60 cm
Coleus 'Royal Glissade'
Foliage is light green with specks of rose. Underside of the learves are also splashed in the same design.
Perennials
Campanula glomerata 'Emerald'
('Emerald' Bellflower)
Flowers are born in clusters or spikes of sky-blue flowers with a thin darker bluish-purple edge. Blooms from late spring through summer.
Height - 60 cm (24")
Campanula takesimana 'Pink Octopus'
Blooms are in shape of a Japanese lantern. They open to a striking pink, above strong deeply cut foliage. Flowers over a long period.
Delphinium Elatum hybrids
(double series)
Hardy new series has arrived from Scotland. Blooms in June. A repeat flowering is possible. Winter hardy to -20 C above ground in an unprotected pot.
Blooms are double. Four colours are available

- Deep mauve tinged blue-green flower spike
- Height - 60cm (24")

- White with green center flowers
- Height - 110cm (44")

- Pale lilac with green center
- Height - 170cm (55")

- Pale lilac barely bordered in blue with open centers
- Height 120cm (48")
Dianthus 'Cranberry Ice'
A neat mounding habit of blue-green fine textured foliage. The tall single blooms appear in early spring
- Height (in bloom) 30-35cm (12-14")
- Height (after bloom) 15cm (6") with 35cm (14") spread
Echinacea 'Pink Double Delight'
An explosion of fragrant, pink, fully double pom pom like flowers borne on straight, sturdy stems. Blooms from early summer to mid-fall.
Location - full sun or partial shade
Height - 60cm (24")
Bloom face measures 12.5cm (5") but, with long centers, they look bigger.
Hemerocallis 'Cherry Valentine'
(Daylily)
Pink petals frame the intense dark eye and ruffled red edge of these 10cm (4") blooms. In shade, almost every bloom has set a pod. Re-blooming tetrapod-type with deep green foliage.
Helleborus 'Double Vision'
This series features double and semi-double blooms in shades of white to pink, rose to red and maroon. Tolerates some dry shade.
Height - 30-45cm (12-18")
Spread - 45-60cm (18-24")
Phlox 'Magic Blue'
Intriguing flowers. Blooms start with dark lavender outer petals and a lighter eye but matures to a softer lavender outer petal with a dark eye. Flowers from June to September.
Height - 90cm (36")
Sedum 'Bon Bon'
New selection from the Netherlands. This stonecrop produces a low mound of chocolate purple leaves. Small clusters of dusty rose flowers appear mid-summer, lasting until autumn when they change into brown seed heads. Excellent for edging or containers. Sunny location.
Height and Spread - 30-40cm (12-16">
Sedum 'Red Cauli'
Another selection from the Netherlands. Foliage is more blue-gray. Flowers are cherry red and bloom from mid-summer through autumn. Blooms ar tight and compact resembling red cauliflower.
Height - 20-30cm (8-12")
Spread - 30-60cm (12-24")
Iris ensata 'Freckled Geisha'
Flowers are huge, 15cm (6") in diameter. White petals are edged with lavender and randomly splashed with lavender.
Height - 70cm (28")
Hibiscus 'Fireball'
Hardy variety. Large flowers are an intense fiery red. Foliage is fine textured with a purplish blush. Blooms from June to September.
Height - 100cm (40")

'Cinnamon Grappa'

'Peppermint Schnapps'

'Brandy Punch'
Foliage resembles maple leaves. Heat loving, blooms July to August and requires full sun.
Large blooms - 20-25cm (8-10") across
Sturdy, erect plants / Height - 100cm (3.5 ft.) / Spread 90cm (3 ft.)
Varieties include:

- 'Cinnamon Grappa' - Solid red blooms.
- 'Peppermint Schnapps' - Large pink blooms with dark pink stripes.
- 'Brandy Punch' - Large pink flowers with bronze leaves that have purple and green accents.
- 'Cherry Brandy' - Foliage is same as "Brandy Punch". Flowers are solid red. (Photo not available)

Euonymus alatus 'Pipzam'
(Pipsqueak Dwarf Burning Bush)
Compact growing dwarf burning bush with horizontal branching.
Height - 120-150cm (4-5')
Spread - 120-150cm (4-5')
An excellent choice for small areas. Typical crimson-red foliage in fall.
Hydrangea macrophylla 'Cityline' Series
'Berlin Rabe'
'Paris Rapa'
'Vienna Rawi'
Large flowers on strong stems with dark glossy foliage. Compact. Excellent mildew resistance. Grows well in partial shade to full sun.
Height - 30-90cm 1-3')
Varieties are .......
'Berlin Rabe' - clear pin blooms.
'Paris Rapa' - intense pinkish red blooms.
'Vienna Rawi' - Dark pink with cream throat.
Hydrangea macrophylla
'Blushing Bride'
Glossy green foliage.
Pure white blooms that mature to a blush pink or blue (depending on soil).
Height - 125cm (4') Spread - 125cm (4')
Weigelia florida
'Verweig'
Dwarf plant with colourful foliage. Leaves are white margined with pink shades. Blooms are purplish pink flowering in early summer.
Height - 30cm (1')
Spread - 40cm (1.5')
Forsythia 'Mindor'
Shrub covered with large golden flowers and dark green foliage. A compact rounded plant with full showy flower display. Does best in full sun.
Height - 90-180cm (3-6')
Buxus 'Golden Dream'
Compact, naturally rounded shrub. Leaves are bright green bordered with gold. Beautiful in a patio or balcony container. It's compact proportions also make it very suitable for use in perennial gardens.
Mature height - 60cm (24")
Ornamental Grasses
Miscanthus sinensis 'Gold Bar'
(Gold Bar Zebra Grass)
A new form of the popular porcupine and zebra grass with greater amounts of golden yellow bands. More colourful than other varieties.
Isolepis cernua
'Live Wire Isolepis'
A unique grass-like plant that is short, has a billowing mound of green leaves that are accented by flower spikes that look like fibre optic strands.
Grows upright when young, then takes on a draping habit as they mature.
This plant is well suited to grow beside ponds and water gardens.

ROSES

Rosa 'BAload'
(Yellow Brick Road)
A shrub rose, neat, round, compact, covered with clusters of old-fashioned lemon-yellow blossoms. Outer petals are slightly lighter in colour. Matures to butter cream colours. Excellent resistance to black spot. Grown on own root.
Rosa FRYglitzy
(Sunshine)
A hybrid tea with brilliant golden-orange blooms that intensify to a bright orange around each petal. Excellent disease resistance.
Rosa Weksunvoye
(Sunstruck Hybrid Tea)
Large flowers are deep yellow-gold blushed with apricot-orange. Each petal has a bright yellow 'peacock' fan pattern on the underside.

VINES

Clematis 'Killian Donahue'
Early flowering. Blooms open ruby red at the center fading to brilliant fuchsia and then orchid colour at the edge of each petal. White anthers have burgundy tips. Repeat bloomer through the summer months. Vigorus bloomer reaching height of 2.4 to 3m (8 to 10')
