Framing a View

Have you thought of gardening and art as being synonymous? When looking through a window in your home, into the yard beyond, you are looking at a picture. The window acts as a frame for the view.

There are many ways to frame a view. Even nature frames views. A tree growing beside a pond with branches overhanging the water may frame a canoe tied to a dock or perhaps a pair of swans swimming. The most common way of framing a view is by use of an arbor.

Arbors are fast becoming popular features in the garden. The arbor is not only a “gateway” to the garden or a structure to support roses or vines. It acts as a picture frame, leading the eye to a particular view seen beyond.

To maximize the pleasant use of such a structure, when preparing to place it in the garden, stand back and look through the arbor. Note what you are framing. Is the view that of the front door? The barbecue on the deck? The brick wall of the neighbouring house? The garden shed? OR, does it add aesthetic value to the property by framing a flower bed? perhaps a flower bordered pathway that curves out of view? Maybe it frames a specimen tree or shrub with a bench beneath beckoning someone to sit and relax.

Visualize the garden as a painting. What part of that painting is worthy of being featured within a frame? Conversation in a garden is often initiated by the sight of some particular point of beauty.
